Masonry Contractor in Pomona, CA - Brick, Block and Stone for Older Homes

P&J Rancho Cucamonga Concrete & Masonry is a masonry contractor based in Rancho Cucamonga. In Pomona we repoint worn brick, repair tired chimneys and build block, brick and stone walls for homeowners.

Stone steps with embedded lights lead through clipped hedges and flowering shrubs to a house, beside a low rock retaining wall.
Stone outdoor kitchen with a stainless-steel grill sits on a paved patio beside a white pergola and seating area.

Pomona's older houses and what they need

Pomona is an older city than most around it, and you can see that in the masonry. On jobs here we find brick chimneys and porch steps that have outlasted their mortar, garden walls laid generations ago, and block walls between yards that have taken a few hits over the years. The hillier southwest side is newer, and there the calls lean toward retaining walls, patios and walkways. We see the same mix next door in Upland and down the road in Chino.

On older brick, most of the work is finding why a crack or loose course showed up before we fix it. On a slope, it's the footing and the drainage behind the wall. Either way, I look at the house and the ground with you before I price anything, because that's what decides the plan.

Working in Pomona: permits, the schedule and what sets the price

In Pomona, building permits come from the city's Building Safety Division, the same office that reviews plans and sends out the inspectors, so on a job that needs a permit, the review and the inspection visits set the calendar as much as the masonry does. Before we start, I check what the city asks for on your kind of job, and when a permit is needed we handle the application and line up the inspections. We're licensed and insured, and local business licenses in Pomona are applied for through the city's website, so that's where to start if a license question comes up.

What moves the price here is mostly what the job turns up, like how much old mortar or brick has to come out, how tall and long a wall runs, how deep its footing goes and how easily we can get block and brick into your yard. The schedule turns on the permit, if there is one, and on what we find once a wall or chimney is open. I come out myself, look it over with you and give you the estimate for your own job, and an experienced mason leads the brick and stone work once we start, the same way we run jobs from Rancho Cucamonga out to Rialto.

  • Older brick here is often a size or color nobody makes anymore, so we look for a close match or borrow bricks from a spot you won't see.
  • Mortar on older houses is usually softer than today's mix, and we match it to the brick, because a joint harder than the brick around it can crack the brick.
  • A block wall between yards usually sits on the property line, so it helps to talk with your neighbor before we take one down, raise it or rebuild it.
  • Narrow side yards and older driveways can make it slow to get block and brick to the back of the lot, and that access shows up in the labor.
  • When a wall needs a permit, the footing is usually checked before we pour, so we plan the pour around that inspection instead of guessing.

Pomona masonry questions we hear

Does a short block wall need a permit in Pomona?

A block wall no more than 2 feet above the lowest ground next to it is exempt from a building permit in Pomona, as long as it isn't carrying a surcharge, extra weight pushing on it from a slope, a driveway or a structure above. The city lists fences up to 7 feet separately from block walls, so we check which rule your wall falls under before we start, and the city's permit guidance is a good place to read up.

Do I need a permit for a small retaining wall in Pomona?

A retaining wall 2 feet tall or less, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, is exempt in Pomona unless it supports a surcharge or holds back certain flammable liquids, which rarely comes up at a house. Because that measure includes the footing, a wall that looks short from the yard can still run over 2 feet, so I count the footing when we plan it.

When can I visit Pomona Building and Safety in person?

Building and Safety takes walk-ins Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at City Hall, 505 South Garey Avenue. City Hall is closed on Fridays, so you can call the division at 909-620-2371 before you go, and if we're handling your permit you usually won't need to make the trip.

How do I know if my Pomona house is historic before masonry work?

Check the city's historic properties page, because Pomona has its own historic districts and landmarks, and many properties here are also on the National Register of Historic Places. If your home may be a designated historic property, I'll ask you to confirm that with the city's planning office before we start.
